Solidarität mit Ägypten - Solidarity with Egypt

Eine kleine Demonstration am Kölner Dom am 6. Februar 2011.
A small demonstration at the Dome of Cologne on February 6th 2011.

When I arrived at the dome at noon on Sunday, February 6th 2011, I did not see any demonstrators at all. Only those three Police vans and one motorbike were signs, that something was supposed to happen here. But watching around, I only saw a few Muslim women, talking to each other. Finally they headed away at the right side of the Dome.

I waited for some more minutes. Four guys appeared, who had signs, which they did not show yet, but I went to them and asked, if they are the demonstration to support the people at Tahrir. They said yes and asked if I also came for this purpose. I said, that I hoped to make some photos to put them on the internet to show the Egyptian people that there is support from Cologne and they found this to be a good idea.

Having not more demonstrators, I shot some photos. Only later I realized that one of the guys – the one who agreed to photos first – always kept his face covered behind his sign. The women I had seen before came back and took out the Egyptian flag to wear it around their shoulders. It was cold and windy at the Dome. More people came by and by.

Still the demonstration was small. When we were about fifty, they decided to start a march through the side streets to the Central Station. The police was joking about the small number of people. I started filming with my little digicam, while walking. I heard a taxi driver say: “And here comes the tv…”

We ended up infront of the station. People built a circle and started chanting. I don’t understand Arabic, but I recognized some of the chants people reportet via Twitter from Tahrir. Many chants were in German also. I saw a guy sit down on the stairs to the dome and writing down some words, he later chanted. More and more people found us or heard the chanting. Some people stopped and asked, what it was about.

An old lady, obviously German and a little extraordinary, stood with the watching police for some time. Then she came over to us and explained, that the revolution is wrong for Egypt. Mubarak is such a beautiful man! She explained with words and gestures, that revolution was a European invention and that the Egyptians got infected by this. After Mubarak there would be another dictator and he would not be as cute as Mubarak.

Another man tried to read the signs. A demonstrator said: We also got some signs in German! And he showed him one, saying “Hau ab Mubarak”. This means “Get out” or “Get lost, Mubarak”. But somehow that man did not get it and said: “I never heard his first name before! So it’s Hau ab?” He had to laugh himself, when the demonstrators had to explain, that this was his own language and not Mubarak’s first name.

Suddenly a reporter of the local tv station appeared and began to film the people. The still small group gathered on the stairs infront of the dome and chanted, while he was filming. A bummer came from the station and started to ask the chanting people for some money, not realizing, what was going on.

After some time we returned the whole way back to the front of the dome. People were talking about the time frame the demonstration was allowed officially and what to do next. More and more bypassers watched or took photos. I had taken photos and made videos until my memory card was full. A German girl asked me, if I wanted to take over the sign, she had carried, because her hands got too cold. So I took it and marched back with them to the Central Station.

Some German guys surprised us all. Standing infront of the station with a big loudspeaker and a micrphone, they suddenly joint the chantings and it turned out that they had been waiting for the demonstration, too.

Finally some people made some speeches, including one of the German guys. He said, that countries like Egypt only served as the shoeshine boys for the western world and that it was time, they decided about their own fate.

A woman from Tunesia had spoken before at the dome. She had said, that Tunesia still is fighting and she wished, Egypt could solve these problems more quickly. She said, the Arabs are all one and they stand together. None of their countries should be a puppet for America or Europe or whoever. They should not copy others, but realize their own way of democracy.

When I left, I had seen a small demonstration of a few people, realized, that in my country many don’t understand, what’s going on, and seen proud people hoping for their own future.

who hacked Cryptome on Oct. 2nd, contacted her. He wanted to be called Ruxpin or Xyrix, as she
writes. The first intention was allegedly to shout out hacker Trainreqs, but then "they" suddenly
changed their minds and shouted out Ruxpin and Xyrix.
Would they really be so stupid to give away their pseudonyms? Or was that another lie?
You won't find Ruxpin on the internet, but Xyrix is known... But how is his reputation? Judge

Wikileaks im Fokus der US-Regierung

Seit nunmehr drei Wochen sitzt der Gefreite Bradley Manning in Untersuchungshaft im Camp Arifjan in Kuwait ohne dass bislang Anklage erhoben wurde. Er steht unter Verdacht, geheime Informationen an die Organisation Wikileaks weitergegeben zu haben, darunter auch ein Video, dass im April um die Welt ging: Die brutale Erschießung einer Gruppe von Männern, die für Aufständische gehalten wurden. Dabei wurden auch zwei Mitarbeiter der Nachrichtenagentur Reuters getötet, ebenso wie ein Familienvater, der einem Verwundeten helfen wollte. Seine beiden Kinder im Wagen wurden unter schweren Beschuss genommen und kamen schwer verletzt noch mal mit dem Leben davon.

Auch ein Video von einem Massaker in Afghanistan soll Manning weitergegeben haben. In der Tat meldet Wikileaks, dieses Video werde zur Zeit noch bearbeitet. Während die Veröffentlichung derartiger Vorfälle von den meisten Menschen gutgeheißen wird, stößt aber die Behauptung, Manning habe auch etwa 260.000 „cables“, geheime Meldungen zu internationalen Angelegenheiten, an Wikileaks weitergeleitet auf kontroverse Reaktionen.

Wikileaks konnte sich bislang rühmen, dass seit der Gründung 2006 noch nie ein Informant enttarnt werden konnte und dass alle Versuche, Veröffentlichungen zu stoppen, bisher scheiterten. Zu diesem Ergebnis kam 2008 auch ein Geheimbericht der US-Regierung, der in Wikileaks ein großes Gefahrenpotential sah. In diesem Bericht, der ebenfalls Wikileaks zugespielt und dort veröffentlicht wurde, kommt man zu dem Schluß, dass die Enttarnung und Verfolgung der Informanten das Vertrauen in Wikileaks brechen und weitere Informanten abhalten könnte, ebenfalls vertrauliche Informationen weiterzugeben.

Genau dies scheint nun im Mai geschehen zu sein. Ein reiner Glücksfall?

Die vermeintliche Enttarnung kam nicht etwa dadurch zustande, dass man das Sicherheitssystem der Aktivisten durchbrochen hätte, sondern dadurch, dass Manning den Ex-Hacker Adrian Lamo kontaktiert und ihm im Chat seine Geheimnisse anvertraut hat. Lamo entschied sich schließlich, Manning dem FBI zu melden und so landete der 22jährige in Militärgewahrsam. Lamo rechtfertigt sein Handeln damit, dass er eine Gefahr für Leib und Leben gesehen habe. Tatsächlich weiß er aber selbst nicht, was denn nun Gefährliches in den 260.000 Meldungen stehen konnte, sondern hat sich auf die Antwort festgelegt, dass man beim Russisch Roulette auch nicht wisse, welche Kammer die Kugel enthalte.

Fragwürdig ist auch die Tatsache, dass Lamo direkt mit seiner Geschichte zu Kevin Poulsen von Wired.com ging. Kevin Poulsen hat wie Lamo eine Vergangenheit als Hacker hinter sich und berichtet immer wieder einmal über seinen Kumpel. Gerade erst hatte Poulsen einen Artikel über Lamo veröffentlicht, dem das Asperger Syndrom diagnostiziert wurde, meist als leichte Form des Autismus beschrieben, die sich auf Gestik und Sprache auswirkt und die Interaktion mit anderen erschwert. Am 6. Juni dann veröffentlichte Poulsen als erster die Geschichte des angeblichen Whistleblowers Manning.

Natürlich ist die US-Regierung am Inhalt der vermeintlichen 260.000 Meldungen interessiert und möchte sicherlich deren Veröffentlichung verhindern. Damit geriet Julian Assange, Gründer und einer der wenigen bekannten Mitglieder von Wikileaks, ins Visier. Einige sprechen gar von Menschenjagd und auch der bekannte Informant Daniel Ellsberg (seine Enthüllungen führten seinerzeit zur Watergate-Affäre) warnt Assange eindringlich, die Bedrohung ernst zu nehmen.

Regierungssprecher Philip J. Crowley bestätigte auf einer Pressekonferenz am 11. Juni, dass man zwei Festplatten, auf die Manning Zugriff hatte, zur Zeit in New York untersuche. Gegen Wikileaks gehe man nicht vor, da zur Zeit noch kein Grund bestehe, und an Gesprächen sei man auch nicht interessiert, da dies nur die laufenden Untersuchungen gefährde. Im Gegensatz dazu berichtete Philip Shenon auf The Daily Beast, dass Regierungsvertreter ihm gegenüber geäußert hätten: „Wir wüssten gerne, wo er ist. Wir würden gerne mit ihm zusammen daran arbeiten.“

Aber dies ist nicht der einzige Widerspruch. Adrian Lamo selbst wirbt immer wieder dafür, Wikileaks finanziell zu unterstützen. Dass er zu den Spendern gehört kam ebenfalls durch eine kuriose Angelegenheit heraus. Anfang des Jahres stand es finanziell schlecht um Wikileaks und man hatte eine email an bisherige Spender geschickt und zu weiteren Spenden aufgerufen. Pikanterweise hatte man aber die email-Adressen für alle Empfänger sichtbar in der Mail belassen. Ein Scherzbold hatte daraufhin Wikileaks provoziert und diese Mail als enthüllendes Dokument eingereicht. Wikileaks sah sich auf die Probe gestellt und entschied sich dafür, die Mail zu veröffentlichen, um den eigenen Prinzipien treu zu bleiben.

Ein weiterer Widerspruch betrifft die Protokolle des Chats mit Manning. Am 10. Juni veröffentlichte Patrick Grey ein Interview mit Lamo bei Risky Business. Im Anschluß an das Interview fügte Grey hinzu, Lamo habe ihm erzählt, er habe die Chat-Protokolle auch an Wikileaks gesandt, es bleibe ihnen überlassen, was sie damit täten. Aber einen Tag später erhält er eine Mail, die angeblich von Assange stammt, in der er aufgefordert wird, die Chat-Protokolle zu übergeben, damit sich die Anwälte auf Mannings Verteidigung vorbereiten können. Außerdem soll er aussagen, er sei durch Krankheit und Drogen beeinflusst gewesen und habe Angst bekommen. Wired.com zitiert nun Lamo, dass er angesichts solcher Beleidigungen die Protokolle nicht herausgeben wolle. Auf meine Rückfrage bei Patrick Grey antwortete dieser nur erstaunt: „Ich habe das auch gesehen. Es kommt mir merkwürdig vor!“

Tatsächlich wurden Ausschnitte aus den Protokollen am 10. Juni bei Wired.com veröffentlicht. Zur Erklärung heißt es, es handle sich um etwa 25% der Originale, da man allzu Privates und militärisch Sensibles herausgehalten habe.

21. Mai

Manning kommt um 1:41 nachmittags in den Chat. Sein „hi“ bleibt unbeantwortet. Nach 3 Minuten fragt er „Wie geht es dir?“. Ohne Antwort teilt er weitere 3 Minuten später mit „Ich bin ein Analyst des militärischen Geheimdienstes, in Ost-Bagdad stationiert, der auf , der auf Entlassung (discharge) wegen „Anpassungsstörungen“ wartet [...]“. Es vergehen weitere 9 Minuten:
„Ich bin sicher, du bist sehr beschäftigt.“ Trotzdem fragt er nach 2 Minuten:
„Wenn du beispiellosen Zugriff auf klassifizierte Netzwerke hättest, 14 Stunden am Tag, 7 Tage die Woche, für mehr als 8 Monate, was würdest du tun?“ Hierauf kommt prompt eine automatisierte Antwort von Lamos PC: „(Ich bin es) müde, müde zu sein.“ Manning wartet ganze 19 Minuten, bis er mit einem „?“ reagiert.

Erst vier Stunden später fragt Lamo: „Was ist deine MOS?“ (MOS = military occupational specialization.)

Der Autor des Artikels erklärt, Manning habe erzählt, er habe 260.000 diplomatische „cables“ an Wikileaks geschickt.

Wieder zu einer ähnlichen Zeit (1:39 am Nachmittag). Manning: „Ich kann nicht glauben, was ich dir hier gestehe :’(“

1 Minute darauf: „Ich bin schon so lange isoliert gewesen... Ich wollte nur nett sein und ein normales Leben führen... Aber die Ereignisses zwangen mich stets dazu, mir Wege auszudenken, um zu überleben... Schlau genug, um zu wissen, was los ist, aber hilflos, irgendetwas zu tun... Niemand hat mich wahrgenommen.“ Er fügt abermals ein :’( an.

2 Minuten später schreibt Lamo: „Zurück.“ Und Manning setzt fort: „Ich medikamentiere mich selbst wie verrückt, wenn ich nicht im Versorgungsbüro bin (mein neuer Arbeitsplatz, seit meine Entlassung läuft bin ich kein offizieller Geheimdienstler mehr)“
Und kurz darauf: „Du hast eine Menge verpasst...“
Lamo fragt kurz danach: „Was für eine Art von Skandal?“ und Manning antwortet: „Hunderte davon“. Lamo:“Wie zum Beispiel? Ich bin ehrlich neugierig auf Einzelheiten.“

Manning: „Ich weiß nicht... Es sind so viele... Ich habe das Originalmaterial nicht mehr“, dann:
„Mhmm... der Heilige Stuhl und seine Position zu den Sexskandalen des Vatikans.“

Lamo: „Improvisiere“ (Play it by ear)

Manning: “Die Grillerei [hier wohl i.S.v. "strenges Verhör" gemeint] in Deutschland” Eine Minute Pause, dann: “Es tut mir leid, es sind so viele… Es ist unmöglich für irgendeinen Menschen all diese Viertelmillionen zu lesen… und sich nicht überwältigt zu fühlen… und wahrscheinlich desensibilisiert“ – „Das Ausmaß ist so groß... und doch an Tiefe so reich“.

Lamo: „Gib mir etwas echtes (bona fides)... Weisse? Irgendwas Spezifisches.“

Manning: „Dieses eine war ein Test: Klassifizierte Nachricht von der US-Botschaft Reykjavik über Icesave vom 13. Januar 2010.“ Er fährt fort: „Das Ergebnis davon war, dass der isländische Botschafter für die USA zurückberufen und gefeuert wurde.“ Und: „Das ist nur eine Nachricht...“

Lamo: „Irgendetwas unveröffentlicht?“

Maning: „Ich müsste Assange fragen“ und „Ich hab das Original ausgenullt“

Lamo: „Warum antwortest du ihm?“

Manning: „Das tue ich nicht... Ich wollte nur das Material da draußen haben... Ich will nicht Teil davon sein“

4 Minuten später erklärt er: „Ich bin eine Quelle, kein Mitarbeiter“ und: „Ich meine, ich bin eine hochbekannte Quelle... Und ich habe eine Beziehung zu Assange entwickelt... Aber ich weiß nicht viel mehr, als was er mir erzählt, was sehr wenig ist“ und „Es kostete mich vier Monate, abzusichern, dass die Person, mit der ich kommunizierte, wirklich Assange war“

Erst vier Minuten später Lamo’s Rückfrage: „Wie hast du das gemacht?“

Abermals fast drei Minuten später: „Ich sammelte mehr Infos, wenn ich ihn befragte, wann immer er in Schweden von Leuten des State Departments beschattet wurde... Ich versuchte herauszufinden, wer ihn verfolgte... und warum... und er erzählte mir Geschichten davon, wie er zu anderen Zeiten verfolgt worden war... Und sie passten zu jenen, die er in der Öffentlichkeit erzählt hat“

Lamo: „War das die Bestätigung? Die Überwachung?“

Manning: „Aufgrund der Beschreibung, die er mir gab, schätzte ich, dass es das Nordeuropäische diplomatische Sicherheitsteam war... die versuchten herauszufinden, wie er an die Reykjavik-Nachricht gekommen ist...“ Dann: „Sie bekamen auch Wind davon, dass er ein Video hat... von dem Gharani Luftangriff in Afghanistan, welches er hat, aber bisher noch nicht entschlüsselt... Es wird erwähnt, dass Lamo Manning danach gefragt hat, ob es ihn beunruhigt, dass die Armee die Wikileaks-Sache untersucht. Manning erwidert, alles sei nullifiziert, also total gelöscht worden. Er erzählt auch, dass er McCord, der in dem Video zu sehen ist, bei Facebook als Freund kontaktiert habe.

Hier endet die von Wired.com herausgegebene Fassung. Merkwürdig, dass die Datierung am 25. aufhört und dann wieder Uhrzeiten genannt sind, die nur den Schluss lassen, dass das letzte
„Gespräch“ am 26. Mai stattfand und bis in den Morgen des 27. Mai andauerte, denn laut Meldungen wurde Manning am 26. Mai verhaftet. Vermutlich ein Redationsfehler.

Absicht ist aber offenbar, den Verdacht gegen Wikileaks am Schluss in den Raum zu stellen. Auch hier kann man sich nur wieder wundern, wieso Lamo immer wieder um Spenden wirbt, wenn er diese Ansicht vertritt.

Die Washington Post hatte für ihren Artikel am 11. Juni offenbar mehr als nur die zensierte Version zur Verfügung. Dort weiß man alles über Mannings Verwandtschaftverhältnisse und sogar seine Körperstatur. Besonders merkwürdig mutet allerdings an, dass Manning die Daten zunächst an einen
„weißhaarigen Australier“ geschickt habe, den er später als Julian Assange identifizieren konnte. Das klingt eher nach geheimen Treffen mit dem großen (weißhaarigen) Unbekannten als nach Kontakten über das Internet. Hat Assange ihm ein Foto geschickt, aber nicht seinen Namen genannt?

Vielsagend ist auch die Aussage von Armeesprecher Lt. Col. Eric Bloom, dass Manning erst letzten Monat degradiert wurde, weil er einen Kameraden angegriffen hatte. Auch widerspricht er der Behauptung, Manning habe die Entlassung bevorgestanden. Sosehr Manning als frustrierter junger Mann dargestellt wird, die Degradierung kann also nicht Grund für die Weitergabe der Daten an Wikileaks gewesen sein, da dies bereits vorher geschah.

Lamo wusste also sehr wohl, dass er die Weitergabe sensibler Daten nicht mehr verhindern konnte. Entweder hatte er also nur um sich selber Angst – wie er einmal selbst gesagt hatte – oder aber er rechnete tatsächlich damit, dass man gegen Wikileaks vorgehen würde – der Organisation, die er unterstützt und für die er wirbt.

Die merkwürdigste Behauptung stellte Jason Mick von DailyTech auf. Er war bei seinen eigenen Lesern in die Kritik geraten, weil er zuerst sehr böse über Adrian Lamo geschrieben hatte, dann aber plötzlich eine Kehrtwende machte und dessen Haltung lobte. In die Kritik gekommen, verteidigte er seine Meinungsänderung: „Ich hatte nicht die Gelegenheit, die diplomatischen Mitteilungen zu prüfen. Lamo jedenfalls HAT ES, und er erzählt mir, sie nannten einige spontane, unvorteilhafte Dinge über Auslandsbeziehungen, welche vermutlich aus dem Kontext gerissen würden.“

Auf meine Anfrage per email, wie er darauf komme, dass Lamo mehr Einblick hätte, als bisher bekannt, hat er nie geantwortet. Sowohl aus dem Chat-Protokoll oben als auch aus seinem Interview mit Patrick Grey erschließt sich eindeutig, dass Lamo eben keine Details kennt.

Stellt sich die Frage, wer hier welche Rolle spielt. Denkbar wäre tatsächlich die Version, die die US-Regierung vermutet: Alles stimmt und Wikileaks spielt mit Worten, denn sie streiten nur ab, dass sie 260.000 Mitteilungen hätten und relativieren es mit „soweit wir wissen“. Daraus deuten viele, dass es sich eben um eine andere Anzahl handelt.

Merkwürdig ist aber, dass Manning selbst nichts Konkretes nennen konnte. Man sollte doch meinen, dass ihn das ein oder andere sehr beeindruckt hat. Die ganze Angelegenheit bleibt dubios und die grundsätzliche Frage „Wer profitiert davon?“ bringt einen hier auch nicht weiter. Die US-Regierung sieht ihren Wunsch erfüllt, einen Informanten aufzudecken und andere potentielle Informanten abzuschrecken. Paradoxerweise beschert sie damit gleichzeitig Wikileaks eine enorme kostenlose PR-Kampagne, wobei das Ganze jetzt auch noch mit dem Beschluss des isländischen Parlaments zusammen fällt, Island zu einem sicheren Hafen für Informationen und Informanten zu machen – wobei Wikileaks an der Ausarbeitung der Vorschläge beteiligt war.

Und Adrian Lamo genießt mal wieder die Aufmerksamkeit, selbst die Drohungen, und twittert fröhlich den ganzen Tag mit der Abgeklärtheit eines Menschen, der halt über den Dingen steht.

Eine win – win-Situation für alle Beteiligten, könnte man fast meinen. Nur Bradley Manning sieht einer unsicheren Zukunft entgegen. Und Assange muss fürchten, dass man ihn aus dem Verkehr zieht. Und Lamo muss fürchten, dass jemand seine Drohung wahr macht, zumal er alle paar Stunden gerne seinen Aufenthaltsort öffentlich twittert.
Sieht man es aus dieser Perspektive, so nutzt es doch der US-Regierung am meisten.
